Checklist of Reading Tips at Home

Run through these questions to see what else you can do to make reading at home more fun and rewarding:

Does someone in the family read with my child every day?

Does my child see other members of the family reading at home?

Do we have a comfortable place to read and does my child like reading there?

When I read aloud to my child, does my voice change for different characters and to show emotion and excitement?

Do  we read books of different lengths and topics to capture interest?

Do I pay attention to how my child responds to the story?

Do I stop reading when my child loses interest?

Are ideas in the story linked to things that happen in my child's life?

Do I encourage my child to talk about books she or he has read or heard?

Do I encourage my child to retell or act out the stories he or she has read?
